Class of `52 Planned Giving Challenge Letter

January 5, 2007

Dear NMH ’52 Classmate:

Our 55th reunion is rushing toward us.  Be sure the dates (June 7-10, 2007) are on your calendar.  There will be a lobster dinner for you June 7, followed by all the great events and classmate camaraderie throughout the rest of the weekend.  We hope you are planning to attend.  It promises to be as much fun as the milestone 50th was, especially if you will be there.

We are delighted to announce that a member of our class (who chooses anonymity for now and to whom we will refer as “the donor”) has issued a special challenge to the rest of us for a capital project.  In honor of the 55th reunion, the donor has committed to establishing a charitable gift annuity with $55,000 if enough fellow classmates also establish gift annuities or make outright gifts that collectively total $110,000 or more.  (The minimum gift amount for an outright gift or a gift annuity is $10,000 in order to be counted against the challenge.  Of course, it can be more, and the larger the gift, the greater your benefits will be.)  If we succeed in meeting the challenge, we will have at least $165,000.  We believe we can do better than that!

We hasten to add that the Annual Fund is still our first priority.  This challenge is seen as a special effort over and above our annual giving, and it is issued separately as a challenge to help stimulate further support of our school and to honor our 55th.

The plan is to name a space or two supporting the music program in the new Rhodes Center for the Arts.  The space will be named for the NMH Class of 1952.  Which space(s) will depend on the total of all our gifts.  Remember, this will only happen if the grand total reaches $165,000 or more.  The larger the collective gift amount, the more prominent the space will be.

An outright gift qualifies for an income tax charitable deduction for the face value of the gift.  It can also be used immediately by the school for its designated purpose.

On the other hand, a gift annuity may be more attractive to you.  It is a simple contract between you and NMH.  Here are the benefits to you from this type of gift plan:

  • You will receive a fixed and guaranteed income for your life (and your spouse’s life, if you wish).  Your annuity rate should be between 6.0% and 6.7%, depending on the number and age(s) of the annuitant(s).
  • Some of the income will likely be tax free.
  • You may also claim a portion of the gift (usually about 40-50%) as a charitable deduction for income tax purposes.

Gift annuities may be funded with cash or long-term appreciated securities, or a combination of both.  When appreciated securities are used, a portion of the long-term capital gain is avoided with the rest being taxable.  However, the taxable gain is reported ratably for tax purposes over your life expectancy.  Consider trading in a low- interest rate CD or low-yielding stock for a fixed and guaranteed rate of return in the range of 6.0-6.7%.  Much of the annuity income will be taxed more favorably than ordinary income.

To indicate your desire to make an outright gift, or to request a gift annuity illustration fitting the facts and assumptions you provide, use the enclosed response form addressed to Marv Kelley ’60, NMH’s Senior Gift Planning Advisor.  Sending Marv the form to request gift annuity information does not obligate you, but you won’t know how beneficial a gift annuity can be without looking into it.  Note that one question on the form asks if you would like to see a comparison of the benefits from an “immediate” gift annuity and a “deferred” gift annuity.  The deferred annuity provides a higher payout rate and charitable deduction; the longer the deferral period (i.e., when annuity payments actually begin), the greater the benefits for you.

Each of us has committed to making a gift to help meet the donor’s challenge.   We hope you will join us.  The donor wants to make his gift, but that will depend on enough of us participating in the challenge.  Let’s get our class name forever mounted on a plaque in the soon-to-be Rhodes Center for the Arts.

Marv is the true expert on these matters, but please feel free to call either of us if you have questions.  (Sybil is making an outright gift.  Russ will do his second gift annuity.)

PLEASE NOTE:  We must meet this challenge by April 10, 2007!

Very sincerely yours,
