Herbarium
Welcome to the Digitized Herbarium Collections of Northfield Mount Hermon SchoolTHE NMH COLLECTION
Herbaria are collections of pressed
identified plant specimens. The NMH collection contains plants
collected by Carol Knox (Botany teacher) and her students over the
last 35 years. Because date and collection information are
available with each record, the herbarium database is a resource
of information about the flowering and fruiting times of plants
from the Northeastern US. The collection currently contains 850
specimens.
Each record includes a digital scan of the
pressed plant as well as complete collection and identification
information. The collection is a rich source of information about
the plants from the campus and other areas of the Northeastern
United States. The Herbarium Collection is located in Cutler
Science Center.
THE PAUL BOWMAN COLLECTION
Paul
Bowman attended Mount Hermon School, graduating in 1918; he
returned as a chemistry teacher in 1936 and taught until 1963 when
he retired and became a library archivist at NMH (a position he
held until 1981). One of his great loves and hobbies was nature
study, and he planted many patches of wildflowers in the Mount Hermon
woods. He enjoyed collecting and identifying wildflowers; some of
his pressed specimens from the early part of this century are
located in the archives. Scans and information about the plants
in his collection are available here in digital form.
