Mathematics
Mission
The NMH mathematics curriculum is designed to teach students to think critically and develop problem-solving skills. Students are trained to effectively communicate their ideas and understanding both verbally and in writing.
Technology facilitates a deeper understanding of the curriculum and enriches instruction. In all courses beyond geometry, students are required to purchase and use a TI-89 graphing calculator, which includes a robust computer algebra system. In geometry, students use a program called The Geometer's Sketchpad, which is available on the NMH computer network.
The department recognizes that students differ
in ability, background, interest, and rate of learning. As a result, the
curriculum offers different levels of courses to fit students' needs. The
department uses teacher recommendations, transcripts, records of aptitudes, placement tests, and
previous achievement to place students appropriately. Honors courses are for
motivated students with a strong mathematical background, and basic courses are
for students with a weak mathematical background.
