Hellas. Greece.  What images come to mind?  Ancient temples, a whitewashed village clinging to a cliff above the blue Aegean, Odysseus homeward bound from Troy, the sprawling modern city of Athens with its traffic and treasures?  In the Greece Senior Seminar you will explore these and much more.

Program:
Our Spring 2008 senior seminar will include three weeks travel in Greece with stays in Athens, Olympia, and Delphi, and the islands where we will explore the marvels of Greece’s antiquities and experience 21st century Greek culture. 

Academic Program:
During the on-campus component of the program, students will study ancient Greece and delve into contemporary issues of modern Greece. This work will prepare students for visits to archaeological sites such as the Acropolis in Athens, the 2500 year old theater at Epidavros, the ancient city of Mycenae, and Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympics. and Akrotiri on Santorini.  The on-campus component also will prepare students for their own personal experiences and considerations of contemporary life and environmental, socio-political, and economic issues in Greece today.

In addition to preparing written assignments and brief oral presentations while on campus, students will research and write a report on an ancient site and report on a contemporary issue while are in Greece.  Students will write use daily journal writing to record and reflect on their experiences both in Greece and while at NMH.  Upon return to campus (in time for Advanced Placement Exams), students will continue to study ancient and contemporary Greece, finalizing a public research project.

Requirements/Credits:

This Senior Seminar is open to seniors by application during the spring of their junior year. This program is open to 12th grade students only. Students who successfully complete the Senior Seminar in Greece will earn three credits.  Most likely the credits will be as follows:  One in English literature, one for senior seminar and one in intercultural communications and/or another related subject.  No previous knowledge of Greek is required.  Students may take this seminar instead of or in addition to any senior English class.

Intercultural Communications:  Intercultural Communications is designed to enhance the study of all term abroad programs.  The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the specific cross-cultural issues they encounter while studying abroad or away from campus.  The course will also develop student awareness of cultural differences and provide them with appropriate coping skills and strategies while they are traveling away from school.  In addition, students will develop an understanding of the basic elements of cross-cultural communication. 

Application:
The application form is available by SWIS in the International Education folder, or by contacting the Office of International Education in Billings Hall, Northfield at x3251.  The completed application including all supporting materials is due in the Office of International Education on March 30, 2007.

Fee:
In addition to the regular cost of tuition, room, and board, students will pay a program fee of $1850.00 plus airfare and other major transportation costs.  Very limited need-based financial aid may be available, yet is not guaranteed.
