Study Abroad, South Africa Sojourn: Humanities II

2006-07 Study abroad program, South Africa

What would you say if you had the opportunity to travel to South Africa for two weeks next spring and do it within your Humanities II course? Think of it as the coursework and content of the regular Humanities II class... plus a really amazing travel and study opportunity! Learn about social change, colonialism, culture and spirituality in a real-world context. South Africa has been shaped and changed by many forces, both internal and external. It is the country it is today through a continuous process of struggle, belief and hope.

Program:
If you are selected to take Humanities II (World History and World Religions) that travels to South Africa, you will spend approximately a two-week study/travel unit in this fascinating culture. The trip allows you to take a close look at the themes of your course in a different setting and context. You will visit different parts of the country, including schools, the countryside, historic neighborhoods, and the sophisticated cities of this country. You will meet with both spiritual and political leaders, as well as students. You might spend a day with a South African student at school. You might participate in a Zulu ritual. Most importantly, you may find yourself in a position to help build understanding.

Requirements:
This program is open to tenth-grade students only.

Space is limited and only 24 students from the spring section of Humanities II can take advantage of this opportunity.

Application:
The application form is available by SWIS in the International Education folder, or by contacting the Center for International Education in Beveridge Hall at x3251.  The completed application, including all supporting materials, is due in the Center for International Education on March 22, 2006.

Fee:
In addition to the regular cost of tuition, room, and board, students will pay a program fee of $4000.00 (which includes your airfare).  Very limited need-based financial aid may be available, yet is not guaranteed.
