Study Abroad, France
2005-06 Study abroad program, FranceThe following is from students who were abroad this winter:
Greetings from France! Everyone’s been having a great time here. Our four weeks at a French lycée here have passed by so quickly. We all had a lot of fun there, and met many new and interesting people, and shared new experiences. For our last week here, we have February vacation, and we all went our separate ways with our host families. Well some of us did. Half of the group will be continuing with the wonderful journeys to Arles, Baux en Provence, and visiting caves in Ardeche. Ashley went to Toulouse, Grace to Paris, Sara E. went skiing in the Alps, and I visited Barcelona, Spain, for several days. Anyhow, we’re all enjoying our times, and the beautiful temperature and weather here everyday. Hope everything is smooth back at NMH. We’ll see everyone soon!

Hi everyone. Every week our group embarks on an excursion, and this week we went to Montpellier, the capital of the Languedoc Rousillon region. The city is very beautiful and clean. One of the first medical universities was founded here in Montpellier. It was started in 1220. We visited the cathedral, which was started in the 14th century. The triumphal arch, the botanical gardens and the place de comédie are among other things that we visited and learned about. Of course, we enjoyed some good French cuisine. Some of us enjoyed sandwiches made with local French bread. I enjoyed a local duck dish. I hope everyone is enjoying themselves at NMH because life is too short! We most definitely are! We miss everyone. See everyone in two weeks!

Class is completely different experience than at NMH. And of course, everything is in French except for the occasional English class which I think we can all agree upon as being the only subject where we fully understand everything that is going on.
Most days of the week class starts at 8am and ends at 4pm or 5pm. Wednesdays and Thursdays are a little different with class ending at noon on Wednesday and starting at noon on Thursday. Throughout the day we don't necessarily see all of "The Americans" (as we have been dubbed), but we do see each other at least twice a week during our group meetings with Lydia.
This was difficult the first week because we were all in a new environment without much connection to the United States let alone NMH. But we have all met plenty of lycée students including some who came to NMH last year.
Last night all of the families, some of the lycée faculty and most of the French students who visited NMH, gathered at a restaurant for dinner. It was a two and a half hour get together complete with duck (that some of us thought was chicken) for the main course. Everyone showed up in their dressy clothes and Matt Lupo represented NMH by wearing his NMH pin on his striped tie.
That's a pretty good but broad recap of the last 10 days or so. More to come from other people!
