2008-09 Study abroad program, South Africa

South Africa Sojourn: Hum II

Spring Semester 2009

Tentative Date: April 2009

What would you say if you had the opportunity to travel to South Africa for two weeks next spring and do it within your Humanities II course?  Think of it as the coursework and content of the regular Humanities II class... plus a really amazing travel &  study component!
Learn about social change, colonialism, culture and spirituality in a real-world context by visits to schools, parliament, an AIDS orphanage. Learn Afrikaner history, see the prison island where Nelson Mandela was held, and join in a Sunday service in Soweto.
These and other experiences will open your eyes to a nation that has been shaped and changed by many forces, both external and internal, that has become the country it is today through a continuous process of struggle, belief and hope.

Leaders: Lorrie Byrom (World History) and Ted Thornton (World Religions)

Program:
If you are selected to this Humanities 2 (World History and World Religions) class, you will follow the sophomore Humanities curriculum during the spring semester, then spend approximately  two weeks studying and traveling in this fascinating culture. The program allows you to take a close look at the themes of your course in a particular setting and context. This trip will take you to different parts of the country, including schools, countryside, historic neighborhoods, and sophisticated cities. You will meet with spiritual and political leaders and students like yourselves. You might spend a day with a South African student in his/her school, you might participate in a Zulu ritual. In any case, you will surely find yourself in a position to help build understanding. See the sample itinerary at the end of this program description.

Credits: Two Humanities II credits (one in History, one in Religion), and one Math credit.*

*Students in this program are enrolled in regular math classes. An NMH math teacher accompanies the group to South Africa and oversees the students’ math work while in-country.

Requirements:
This program is open to mature, motivated 10th grade students only.

Space is limited and only twenty-four students from the spring section of Humanities II can take advantage of this opportunity.

Application:
The application form is available by SWIS in the International Education folder, or by contacting the Center for International Education in Beveridge Hall at x3251. The completed application including all supporting materials is due in the Center for International Education on March 31, 2008.

NO late applications will be accepted.

Fee:
In addition to the regular cost of tuition, room, and board, students will pay a program fee of $4200.00 (which includes your airfare). Very limited need-based financial aid may be available, but is not guaranteed.

Questions? Contact the CIE at #3251 or via SWIS cie@nmhschool.org
or ask any Humanities teacher

See you in Soweto!

What former students have to say:

I loved this trip, bonding with people, the culture; it’s something I’ll never forget.

..I have become a more knowledgeable person and I’ve grown a lot

I had never been out of New England, and this was the most amazing trip I’ve ever been on

Excellent trip: extremely powerful!

...the most eye-opening experience I ever had!

...I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
