History and Social Science

Mission

The NMH history and social science department believes that the study and teaching of its disciplines has never been more important.  Understanding the explosive political and historical forces of the 21st century is critical to an informed and enlightened responsibility in the modern world.  Yet even as we lay strong foundations in reading, viewing, critical analysis, and writing, we celebrate the drama and spectacle of the human experience in all its dimensions and work to pass this enthusiasm on to our students.

The department sees the wisdom both of teaching within its disciplines and working with other departments to create a curriculum that offers an inclusive and comprehensive view of the nation and the world.  Skills and concepts are taught through a cohesive program that prepares student for college and for life, for the mundane and the sublime.  High professional standards, a cosmopolitan outlook, a passion for their work, and an abiding concern for their students lives distinguish and motivate the History and Social Science faculty as they deliver their contribution to the mission of Northfield Mount Hermon.
