English as a Second Language
Mission
The ESL program promotes the acculturation of international students into the academic and social community of NMH. Its emphasis in the classroom is on acquisition of the linguistic, metacognitive, and social skills necessary for transitioning into mainstream classes. In addition, by validating these international students’ cultural perspectives, it gives them a voice in the NMH community beyond the confines of the academic classroom.
Diploma Requirements
Students whose first language is not English will be given an English language proficiency test upon arrival. Enrollment in the ESL program may be required based on the result of this test. Results of the ESD/English placement test will determine graduation requirements to be met. ESL student must pass a minimum of one major course in non-ELS English at the 400 level (senior English).
