LibGuides are subject-specific guides to Schauffler Library's resources and to quality internet sites. Most of our LibGuides are created by teacher-librarian collaboration to support specific class assignments.

What is information literacy?

Information literacy incorporates essential competencies for lifelong learning, requiring students develop critical thinking and effective research skills, including the ability to locate, evaluate, and utilize information in a variety of formats.

How does Schauffler Library teach information literacy skills?

Librarians collaborate with classroom teachers to tailor instructional sessions to specific class assignments. Skills taught include:

• Understanding the organization of the library collection
• Determining information needs and selecting appropriate sources
• Learning how to use the library catalog
• Developing effective strategies
• Distinguishing between popular and scholarly publications
• Identifying point of view and bias in resources
• Using information ethically, including proper source citation
