About NMH Welcome
Message from the Head of School
Welcome to the NMH website. While a “virtual visit” can never adequately convey what is truly special and distinctive about NMH, a jaunt through our website will reveal why NMH has earned its reputation as one of the best coed independent schools in the country.
An NMH education is both rigorous and relevant. At its center are relationships between eager learners and devoted teachers and an academic program that brings out the best in both pupil and mentor. Here one finds the traditional rigors of a highly challenging college-preparatory curriculum, as well as the flexibility—and commitment—to meet always evolving, individual interests and needs of current students. Our school motto, education for the head, heart, and hand, aptly describes our whole-student-centered philosophy. Our most basic aim is to awaken in each student a personal, individual sense of purpose.
We are a place where individual passions and community responsibilities flourish simultaneously, synergistically. We hold our students to high standards because we have high expectations for their success—here at NMH and beyond. Learning at NMH happens throughout the day, in every corner of the campus. We nurture the curiosity, ability, and integrity of each of our students. Pushed and encouraged by adults who believe in them, NMH students develop a basis for success in college and, more broadly, for knowing how to put their lives to good use in a rapidly changing world.
An NMH graduate once suggested that NMH “put the independent in independent schools.” If that is true, we could not be more proud of the distinction. Unquestionably, NMH has always been a pioneer on the frontier of secondary education. At NMH, tradition and innovation strike a healthy balance—creating a foundation for learning and living that our alumni tell us over and over again has served them extremely well.
Thank you for your interest in Northfield Mount Hermon.
