FACILITIES PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

NMH was affected by the heavy rains and flooding that hit much of the Northeast in October. The basements of Cutler Science building and the plant office building were flooded, but the minor damage was quickly addressed without disrupting the academic program. In addition, the rain washed away sections of sod from the newly-installed athletic fields, but repairs were made and the two new regulation fields on the lower campus are now green and ready for action in the spring.

EDUCATIONAL AND RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS

Mountain Day was also washed out this fall. Due to snow, park rangers closed Mount Monadnock, the 3,165 foot mountain seniors climb each year. Because Mountain Day is a long-cherished tradition at NMH, current students will not go without. In October students were given a well-deserved day off, but next spring, we will organize an all-school hike up our usual Mountain Day mountains.

As reported in earlier communications, the transition to one campus provided the opportunity to create a schedule that enhances the educational experience for our students. Dean of Faculty Lorrie Byrom and the schedule committee have paid close attention to how students and faculty are adjusting. With the first term nearly over, the committee decided to tweak the winter term schedule in response to faculty and student suggestions for further improvements and efficiencies.

PHILANTHROPY

Alumni, parents, and friends of the school are demonstrating strong support for NMH by giving to the Annual Fund. Although the 2005-06 fundraising year has just begun, records show a 20 percent increase in dollars and a 14 percent increase in the number of gifts to the Annual Fund as of October 31. This support is deeply appreciated.

Tom Sturtevant is pleased to announce that Allyson L. Goodwin, NMH class of 1983, has accepted the position of chief advancement officer. Goodwin has 18 years of development and fundraising experience in the nonprofit and educational sectors. She will lead the advancement office, formerly known as development and alumni relations, and oversee all aspects of development, alumni relations, public affairs, and communications. Goodwin will begin in her position as chief advancement officer on January 3, 2006. An article about her appointment will appear in the winter issue of NMH Magazine.

Off-campus Christmas Vespers will be held at Saint Bartholomew's Church in New York City on December 16. Those in the metropolitan area are invited to the concert and a reception, both of which will be attended by Head of School Tom Sturtevant and his wife Betsy.
