About NMH Future
May E-news bulletin
NORTHFIELD CAMPUS NEWS
The NMH Board of Trustees convened for its annual spring
meeting May 5-7. Trustees heard reports about academic and
student life, enrollment, development and alumni relations,
and capital plans and budget. Several also had the
opportunity to attend classes and meet with faculty and
students. The board paid special tribute to President
Richard W. Mueller '62, who is leaving the school in June,
as well as to secretary to the board, faculty member, and
coach Grace Robertson, who is retiring after 48 years at
NMH.
An informational brochure produced by the school’s real
estate consultants, under the direction of the Northfield
Stewardship Committee of the board, is viewable on the NMH
website at www.nmhschool.org/about/future/northfield or on
the LandVest website at www.landvest.com. This spring, the
brochure was mailed to nearly 2,000 educational leaders and
organizations throughout New England and New York, as well
as to various media outlets.
A news segment about the campus consolidation appeared
on WWLP-TV 22 News, the NBC affiliate in western
Massachusetts.
FACILTIES PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
Design plans for the new admission building will be
unveiled in early summer. Architectural firm CBT is
proposing a warm and homey, three-story brick building with
a wrap-around porch, sited between Crossley and Cutler. The
placement achieves several physical goals: it completes the
northernmost boundary of a natural “quad”; provides
spectacular views including a broad vista of the campus, a
sloping meadow, and the river valley; and creates a “wow”
moment upon entrance to the campus. To further enhance the
latter feature, the entry drive will be rerouted slightly to
lead visitors from the magnificent pine alley, through a
corner of the meadow away from the backside of Crossley, and
directly into the heart of the campus. More important, the
admission office will occupy a welcoming and beautiful
facility that will fully meet its program needs. Targeted
completion date is in fall 2006.
EDUCATIONAL AND RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS
A new academic schedule will be introduced in September.
Time previously allowed for busing between campuses will
be put to use as a third long-block class period. This
provides opportunities for weekly all-school meetings,
improved athletics and arts practice scheduling, and a
more consistent and structured afternoon for all students.
The school will remain on a trimester calendar.
Dean of Faculty Lorrie Byrom announced that Michael
Corrigan has been chosen as the school’s new chaplain.
Corrigan is currently a rector in Brookline, Massachusetts.
He previously served as Episcopal chaplain at Harvard
University and at Boston University. He and his wife
Patricia are the parents of two grown children and a third
who is attending college.
