About NMH The Future

January E-news bulletin

NORTHFIELD STEWARDSHIP

  • On January 8, the Northfield stewardship committee of the board (NSC), including five trustees and President Richard W. Mueller ’62, met on campus with about 50 alumni who have volunteered to work with the school as Northfield advisors. They discussed the progress of the NSC to date and next steps, historical documentation and preservation of the campus, and other issues of particular importance to NMH alumni as the school moves forward with its strategic plans. The advisors will be asked to lend their expertise and ideas in the months ahead.
  • Phase I analyses carried out by real estate consultants Bidwell Advisors [www.bidwelladvisors.com] and LandVest [www.landvest.com] confirmed that use of the Northfield campus by a single educational institution would be the most consistent with NMH’s mission and character. In February, the board of trustees will consider ways to communicate the property’s availability to appropriate organizations.

FACILITIES PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

  • Construction of the two student cottages continues despite the wintry weather. Builders are erecting a mock-up [www.nmhschool.org/future/construction/photos.html] to illustrate building details such as roof, gutter system, windows, siding, and bricking. Once the suggested materials are installed, the mock-up is used to determine compatibility of products, proportionality, appearance, and other specifications.
  • The two modular classroom buildings [www.nmhschool.org/future/construction/photos.html] have been installed in the vicinity of the farm. Although the exterior of the buildings are not particularly attractive at present, they will be heavily landscaped in the spring and will provide comfortable, spacious, and well-lit spaces for classes while campus facilities planning develops.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

  • In early February all members of the NMH community will receive in their mailboxes an informational newsletter about campus planning. Included in the content is an educational program outlook from Head of School Tom Sturtevant.
  • The NMH Admission Office held a successful open house for prospective students and their families on January 15. Nearly 50 families attended; many said they were very impressed both by the NMH students and faculty they met, as well as the school’s overall educational goals and plans to move to one campus. The admission office has sponsored four open houses this year, with a total of 204 families attending.
  • In support of students, Dean of Student Nicole Hager is posting weekly updates on the school’s intranet to answer questions about NMH next year.
