NMH announces $2.5 million gift

october 25, 2006

Dear NMH Community Member,

I am delighted and honored to announce that David F. Bolger, class of 1950, has donated his second major gift to NMH in less than a year—$2.5 million for the proposed construction of a new admission building. Last May Mr. Bolger gave NMH securities valued at $10 million to be used to endow scholarships, establish a faculty chair, and support an endowment for Memorial Chapel. The value of these securities has since appreciated. He has given the school more than $15 million over the past two decades, more than any other donor in the school's 127-year history.

A true philanthropist, Mr. Bolger has supported a wide range of projects at NMH, including facilities renovations—he was one of the lead donors towards a $5 million gift from the class of 1950 to renovate Alumni Hall—scholarships, and the Moody Legacy Fund. He is the founder and president of Ridgewood, New Jersey-based Bolger & Co., Inc., and the former chairman and sole stockholder of the Farmers & Merchants State Bank in Boise, Idaho. In addition to his gifts to NMH, Mr. Bolger has supported many other charitable causes such as disadvantaged youth, senior citizens, and mental health programs; YMCAs; hospitals; and a variety of conservation activities and educational opportunity programs.

In recognition of Mr. Bolger’s loyalty and generosity, and to honor his parents, who encouraged him, his brother Bill, and his sisters Betty and Barbara to succeed at NMH, the new building will bear the Bolger name. The overall project includes a modified campus entryway that will lead directly to the building, which will be designed to create a warm, student-focused atmosphere and provide an unforgettable connection to the dramatic landscape of the campus.

Mr. Bolger’s leadership gift signals yet again his deep commitment to Northfield Mount Hermon School, his remarkable philanthropy, and his support of our mission to awaken in students their individual passion to learn, to grow, and to contribute to their community. Later this fall we will unveil plans for the building, which will greatly enhance our ability to serve prospective families and introduce them to the spirit of the NMH community.

Sincerely,
Thomas K. Sturtevant
Head of School
