About NMH Future
April E-news bulletin
Earlier this month, Director of Communications Deb Holman
sent an e-mail to alumni asking for their memories to help with
a new admission project. She received nearly 100 responses from
alumni around the world who wrote about every topic from special
teachers and friends to meaningful classes and trips abroad to
work job and community service experiences. Holman sends a
heartfelt thank you to all who sent submissions, and she will
contact you if she would like to use your words. All messages
will be saved for possible future use.
NORTHFIELD CAMPUS NEWS
On April 5, the board of trustees agreed to launch a
major initiative to find an educational enterprise for the
Northfield campus. Head of School Tom Sturtevant and
President Richard Mueller have sent a letter to all members of our
alumni community explaining the initiative. You can view the
letter and other informational materials on our website at www.nmhschool.org/about/future/northfield.
The board of trustees will convene its annual spring
meeting on campus May 5 to 7.
President Richard W. Mueller ’62 has accepted the
position of head of school at the Hong Kong International
School.
Save the date! The development and alumni relations
office is planning an on-campus event for alumni on
September 9 and 10 to celebrate and honor the Northfield
campus. More information will be available throughout the
summer.
FACILITIES PLANNING AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
Construction of the new dorms is on schedule.
We have nearly completed the programming planning for
the new center for the arts, which will lead to the
conceptual design phase. In addition, the tall brick
building with large windows next to the power plant and near
the farm (currently housing the laundry) will be retrofitted
and renovated for our visual arts program. This building
offers exciting possibilities for drawing, painting,
printmaking, ceramics, and other art courses.
Initial design and site planning is taking place for
both the new admission building and athletics facilities
enhancements. We will keep you informed as plans progress;
drawings and schematics of buildings and overall landscape
plans will be posted on the website as they are completed
and approved.
Facilities space planning is well underway for next
year. Senior staff is working closely with the office of
plant and property to finalize the locations of the school’s
administrative functions for next year and beyond. Later
this month, several staff offices will be moved to one of
the modular buildings to allow renovation work to begin in
Holbrook Hall.
EDUCATIONAL AND RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS
Dean of Students Nicole Hager and her staff have been
working closely with students to prepare them for the move
to one campus next year. She posts frequent updates for
students, which you can view on our website at
www.nmhschool.org/parents/hager.
The admission office sent letters of acceptance to
students in March, and they held a series of class visit
days this month. We’re excited by the number of excellent
and talented students who applied, many of whom have chosen
NMH as their first choice.
After 20 years of distinguished service as athletic
director, Frank Millard is stepping down from this position
in June. Millard will continue to serve as chair of the
physical education department and as a varsity head coach. A
search for a new athletic director has begun.
Chaplain Betty Stookey has decided to move to her Blue
Hill, Maine home full time to pursue other interests. The
school is currently undergoing a national search for a new
chaplain.
PHILANTHROPY
In March, the office of development and alumni relations
announced that parents of a 1974 NMH graduate had committed
a $350,000 endowment gift to support the school’s Humanities
II program. This required sophomore program, International
Perspectives, consists of two collaboratively taught
courses that focus on human cultures over time: Topics
in World History and Religions of the World. Each year,
a selected group of students travels to South Africa to
experience firsthand the course’s major themes.
