The Chat

With the end of the school year comes the senior prom, known as the Chat because it originally was held in the Chateau, a magnificent 99-room reproduction of a French chateau in Northfield. The Chateau was ideal as a setting for a senior prom, lending the romantic atmosphere to make every dance a success. The first senior dance was held there in 1939. Unfortunately, over the decades the Chateau’s girders rusted, the concrete cracked, and the building had to be torn down in 1963. After its demolition, a number of locations were tried for the prom, but none proved satisfactory until someone had the idea of putting up a tent south of Ford Cottage, the head of school’s home, where it’s still held today.
