The Spade Oration, a tradition dating back to the school’s beginning, adds a unique touch to commencement. First a member of the graduating class passes on to a rising senior a spade, which symbolizes hard work as well as planting and new growth. The rising senior then gives a speech, called the Spade Oration, that touches on the theme of work and cultivation.
