Toward the end of fall term comes the annual Bemis-Forslund Pie Race, a 4.3-mile footrace named for Henry Bemis (class of 1891), who donated prizes starting in 1908, and for Gladys Hall Forslund, a Northfield alumna and wife of longtime Mount Hermon athletic director Axel Forslund. She put the race into its present form and started the practice of awarding pies to any runner who completed the course in a specified time. As running enthusiasm grew in the country, more and more alumni started coming back to NMH to participate. It is now quite common for 200 or 300 pies to be given out for students, faculty, alumni, and parents who finish the race below the target time.
