Northfield Campus FAQs
nmh magazine, winter 2007
There have been many questions about the Northfield campus since the school consolidated onto a single campus in fall 2005. The following FAQs provide some core information.
Is a sale or lease of the Northfield campus imminent?
Nothing is pending, but we’ve had over 70 legitimate inquiries, with a couple of serious prospects; most inquiries are from education-related fields. Director of the Northfield Campus Initiative Carol Lebo has led dozens of tours.
Will the campus be split up?
We’re seeking a single educational user as our first priority, but we’re also interested in the possibility of a consortium of users to fully occupy the campus. Any combination of uses will be carefully worked out with the interested parties as well as local interests.
Will the school retain historic Moody sites?
Special consideration will be given to the Moody legacy buildings: the Birthplace, the Homestead, and the Auditorium. Round Top, D. L. and Emma Moody’s burial place, is also a Moody legacy site. As potential users come forward, we’ll negotiate with them the exact form in which our stewardship interest will be realized.
How well is the campus being maintained?
The buildings are regularly monitored, and security also patrols them. Heat and electricity are maintained in all buildings; water is turned off in unoccupied buildings. Buildings and grounds receive regular repairs, but deferred maintenance projects remain on hold. About 60 employees still work on the Northfield campus: Dolben Library, Revell Hall, Holton Hall, and Green Pastures are in use. In summer 2006 the campus was occupied every week for athletic camps, and reservations for summer 2007 are already full. During this school year, a number of smaller conferences use the campus from time to time.
Who oversees planning for the Northfield campus?
The full board of trustees is responsible for deciding the future uses of the property and facilities. The Northfield stewardship committee (NSC) of the board includes trustees, Head of School Tom Sturtevant, CFO Rick Wood, and Director of the Northfield Campus Initiative Carol Lebo. Trustee Carol Ramsey ’70 serves as chair of the NSC.
What will happen to class trees, plaques, benches, and so forth?
Assistant Head of School Charlie Tierney and archivist Peter Weis ’78, along with the school’s plant facilities department and other departments, recently conducted a thorough inventory of the Northfield campus, including items of historical value, commemorative gifts from alumni donors, artwork, furnishings, and more. Items are being appropriately relocated or stored. We’re now working directly with alumni and friends who provided named buildings, items, and areas on Northfield to find appropriate ways to continue to honor their contributions. Marggie Slichter ’84, advancement staff liaison for the Northfield history project, will lead this effort.
What about Sage Chapel and its contents?
The chapel requires structural repairs but otherwise has been well maintained. The carillon will be relocated to the tower of The Rhodes Arts Center when a donor comes forward. Appropriate plans for the restored organ are also under discussion.
Will Sacred Concert still be held in the Auditorium?
We plan to continue use of the Auditorium for Sacred Concerts for the foreseeable future.
