Honor Northfield Events


As of September 2005, NMH will be a one-campus school on the Mount Hermon campus. To honor and celebrate the significance and beauty of the Northfield campus after 126 years of operation, many events were planned. Following is a sampling.

April 1

  • Noel Stookey in concert
    Sponsored by NMH Concert Choir and Office of Student Programs; proceeds benefited Northfield Elementary School music program

April 3

  • A dinner to honor Marquand Hall
    Students who currently live in Marquand hosted a special dinner, program, and photo gallery for the on-campus community.

May 15

  • Sacred Concert, Auditorium, 2:30 pm
    “O Northfield Beautiful”

  • Northfield open houses and walking tour
    All Northfield houses presented open houses immediately following Sacred Concert. Photographs chronicling the history of the individual houses and other presentations were on display for Sacred Concert guests.

  • Images of Northfield photography exhibit by artist
    Sharon La Bella-Lindale, The Green Room, Auditorium (on display when the Auditorium is open, including at Reunion 2005, and by appointment)

May 20

  • N-fusion
    Student spring fling at Tracy Student Center with live music, food, games, and prizes

May 22

  • A gathering to honor Northfield
    Round Top at 11 am, Memorial Chapel lawn at 1:15 pm

    Students, faculty, and staff gathered at Round Top to honor the spirit of Northfield campus through music, dance, poetry, and prayer. Participants then traveled to the Mount Hermon campus for a gathering at Memorial Chapel lawn for more song, words from Head of School Sturtevant, and the blessing of a special Northfield tree that was replanted at Mount Hermon.

May 29

  • Baccalaureate service
    This end-of-year traditional program included the personal reflections of five Northfield alumnae: Nancy Bartram Beecher '44, Irma Klein Schachter '45, Jean Fuller Farrington '53, Becky Parfitt Kennedy '67, and Deborah Arnold Chavez '71.

June 2

  • All-school meeting for students, faculty, and staff
    Premier showing of Remember Northfield, a DVD slide show with sound track of Northfield voices and musicfrom Ira Sankey to "Jerusalem" to the Northfield Benedictionand 200 photographs depicting the campus through the decades; ice cream social

June 9-12

  • Reunion 2005: Honor Northfield events
    "Finding the Highest and Best Use of the Northfield Campus: The Journey" by Northfield Stewardship Committee Chair and trustee  Carol Ramsey '70

    "Historical Remembrances of Northfield Mount Hermon" by NMH staff and native Northfield resident Lorrie Stearns Proal Hon '64 & '68

    Remember Northfield, a DVD music and slide show by NMH college counselor David Thompson and archivist Peter Weis '78

    "Tell your favorite Northfield Stories" videography booth organized by NMH Outreach Director Annette Mackin Wadleigh

    "Landscape History of the Northfield and Mount Hermon Campuses" by historian Karen Forslund Falb '59

    Archives in Dolben Library open June 10 and 11. Class and school memorabilia on display. Archivist Peter Weis '78 available for conversation.

September 9-10

  • Celebrate Northfield: A special opportunity for alumni to return to NMH to join current students in Opening Convocation, honor and celebrate the Northfield campus, and participate in a range of activities, many of which were suggested by alumni after the January 2004 decision to move to one campus (more information)

Commemorating Northfield

  • NMH Magazine spring edition honors the Northfield campus

  • Poster of Northfield architectural details, at locations around campus

  • The specially designed Celebrate Northfield banner moves from one site to another on the Northfield campus and appears at special events

  • Class of 2006 projectNorthfield blanket on sale by members of the current junior class

  • Celebrate Northfield student T-shirt contest underway

  • Commemorative Hillside mug and Hibbard glass available for the on-campus community; also for sale at Reunion 2005
